Nurses and midwives who have completed their
training and gained registration in countries
outside the Republic of Ireland must apply for
admission to the Register maintained by An Bord
Altranais (The Nursing Board) prior to practising in
Ireland.
The majority of applicants with a current Nursing
Registration in another developed country should
have little difficulty in obtaining registration
with An Bord Altranais.
There is a fee for assessing your application.
An Bord Altranais may require you to complete a
period of orientation prior to registration to
prepare for practice in Ireland. This period of
orientation needs to be planned in accordance with
guidance from An Bord Altranais.
You should seek a placement as soon as you have a
decision from An Bord Altranais.
On satisfactory completion of the period of
orientation, a reference is completed by the
supervisor recommending you for registration with An
Bord Altranais.
